Music education in four 'conservatories' (orphanages), of which the Pietà dei Turchini developed into the actual Conservatorio. They were instrumental in the rise of the so-called Neapolitan School of opera, esp. opera buffa, which reached its climax in the first half of the 18th c.

Great singing tradition: from popular canzonette Napolitane to Farinelli and Caruso.
