musical history

Ferrara

Musical culture flourished especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Este family ruled. The most prominent Franco-Flemish musicians were for some time in the duke's service: Dufay, Josquin, Obrecht (who died here in 1505), Brumel, Willaert and Rore. Pietrobono del Chitarino (†1498) was considered one of the best singers and instrumentalists of his time. Alfonso della Viola and Antonio del Cornetto point to the importance of instrumental music. Later Italian masters: Luzzaschi and his pupil Frescobaldi.
