Moldavia
The former Soviet republic of Moldavia, in earlier times called Bessarabia, became independent in 1991. There are strong ethnic and linguistic ties with Romania; the strip north-east of the river Dnyestr focuses on Russia and calls itself Transnistria. The standard of living is the lowest of Europe. No traces of Moldavian composers were found but the National Opera is worth mentioning.
