Château: Orangerie
Minister Colbert had this castle built in 1670. The Orangerie (1686) was an important platform for musical performances. The next proprietor, the Duke of Maine, had these concerts continued under the supervision of the composer Jean-Joseph Mouret (1682-1738). His Grandes Nuits de Scéaux in 1714 and ’15 were also visited by king Louis XIV, the father of the duke.
At present, the castle houses the museum of Isle de France; there are souvenirs of Wagner’s stay in Meudon.

The Pavillon Lully belonged to Lully’s country estate La Guyarde, which became the Royal China factory between 1855 and 1876. Today it is a pedagogical institute. In this tea house, Lully is said to have composed the well known folk song Au clair de la lune, mon ami Pierrot, prête moi ta plume pour écrir un mot. It was quoted by Saint-Saëns in Fossils from his Carnival of Animals.

Maurice Ravel lived here with his family from 1905 until the death of his father in 1908. After having lived in Paris (>fp5) and – after his mother’s death – in Saint Cloud (>9255), he moved in 1921 to Montfort-l’Amaury (>fr2), while his brother Edouard returned to the house in Levallois. The composer stayed frequently in his fine room with art-déco decorations by Léon Leyritz. The house was unfortunately demolished.

The organist and composer Nicolas de Grigny (1672-1703) worked here from 1693 to 1696; pieces from his Livre d’orgue were copied by J. Sebastian Bach. The monumental church, the mausoleum of all the French kings until Louis XIII, has an organ, the case of which was designed in 1836 by the architect of the restoration, Debret, while the young Aristide Cavaillé-Coll was responsible for the final instrument – his first great commission, 1841, IV/p/70.
