musical history

Seat of the Palatinate 1720-78; prince elector Karl Theodor ruled here from 1753. He engaged first-class musicians like J. Stamitz, who formed the best orchestra of Europe. Its musicians (and the Weber sisters!) tempted Mozart four times to the town. The 'Mannheimer Schule' also included the composers Cannabich, Holzbauer, FX Richter.  Severe war damage wiped out most traces of this flowering time.
The addresses in the inner city bear block codes (Quadrate) instead of streetnames.
